Should You Keep Your Pet Outside???

For pet owners, the issue of keeping your pet outside is a very important one. As someone who has had quite a few pets in her lifetime – dogs, cats, chickens, geese, hamsters, birds and mice – this has been a big question. Ok, I was never really going to keep the chicken in the house, or the geese for that matter, but I’m always quite happy to let the dogs stay in, providing they don’t create any extra hassle.

But this is the issue isn’t it? Dogs can cause a lot of hassle in the house, as can cats. According to Ladymotor, pets cause around £3.3billion worth of damage every year, or more directly, just under £700 per pet-owning household.

Dogs are some of the worst offenders, causing 55% of all damage caused by pets while cats follow in close second causing just under 30%. Surprisingly even goldfish made the list. It seems that no matter what kind of pet you have, as long as you keep it indoors, it’s likely to cause some kind of damage to your property.

Now, the true pet lover will say the same is true of children. A baby could very easily draw on the walls, throw up on the floor and spill juice all over the expensive rug. But you wouldn’t keep your baby outside would you?

Of course not, at least I hope this is the case.

As a pet owner and lover I always see keeping the pet outside as the very last resort. My first dog puddles – aptly named considering his keenness to pee on just about everything – was put through just about every dog training technique that exists. I tried punishing him when he was bad, rewarding him when he was good, rubbing his nose in it – whatever was recommended I tried it. Perhaps, looking back I didn’t put enough time into it, there’s always the belief that given enough encouragement and coaxing, things would have changed.

This didn’t happen and puddles was forced to live outside. He wasn’t very happy about it (I wouldn’t have been either if I was him), but it had to be done. Other dogs have managed to learn and so have stayed inside.

If you do have a pet, and realise that it could cost you an average of almost £700 worth of damage to your house per year, put some money and time for pet training aside. It may seem like unnecessary spending, but when you compare it to the potential costs of repair, it’s minute and definitely worth it.
